How to Measure Your Head for a Wig (and Get the Perfect Fit Every Time)
Compartir
Nothing diminishes a great wig faster than a bad fit. A wig that's too tight causes headaches and stress on your edges; one that's too loose shifts and slides throughout the day. The good news? Getting the right size is simple when you know what to measure.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (fabric, not metal)
- A mirror
- A pen and paper to record your measurements
The 6 Key Measurements
1. Head Circumference
Wrap the measuring tape around the perimeter of your head, starting at your hairline at the center of your forehead, going around to the nape of your neck, and back to the start. This is your most important measurement.
- Average: 21.5–22.5 inches (55–57 cm)
2. Front to Nape
Measure from your hairline at the center of your forehead, over the top of your head, down to the nape of your neck.
3. Ear to Ear (Across the Forehead)
Measure from the top of one ear, across your forehead, to the top of the other ear.
4. Ear to Ear (Over the Top)
Measure from the top of one ear, over the crown of your head, to the top of the other ear.
5. Temple to Temple (Around Back)
Measure from your temple, around the back of your head, to the opposite temple.
6. Nape of Neck
Measure across the back of your neck at the nape, from hairline to hairline.
Standard Wig Cap Sizes
| Size | Circumference |
|---|---|
| Petite | Under 21.5 inches |
| Average | 21.5–22.5 inches |
| Large | 22.5–23.5 inches |
Pro Tips for the Best Fit
- Measure with your hair as flat as possible — braided down or under a wig cap.
- Most wigs include adjustable straps at the nape to fine-tune fit by up to half an inch.
- If you're between sizes, size up and use the straps to tighten.
